This is final (May 11, 2005)

Time for a short lesson on how to release a map in complete and final form. This is of course entirely unrelated to any map I may have made recently.

  1. Always ensure you have enabled the right visgroups. In particular, check that your visgroup with all your clipping brushes - which stop players from being able to jump to areas they shouldn't get to - is enabled. You never know when players will hop from rocks, to crate, to rooftop, then post about it on all the major forums.
  2. Ensure your overlays match up tidely, particularly where brushes join, maybe at slightly different angles. You may find this happens in an area with lots of sniping, maybe with a bomb site too.
  3. Always compile your map properly. Give it a full compile, with all settings on full. Only idiots click the wrong button, do an onlyents compile, and end up with servers flashing the `This map is not final!! Needs to be rebuilt without -keepstalezip and without -onlyents' message.
  4. Check that your map fulfills all the criteria for a good, complete, playable map, prior to labelling it `final' and giving it to a magazine to publish on thousands of pressed CDs. Only a smelly person would make the mistake of not thoroughly checking their work before having it published.

Of course, I'd never make any or all of the above mistakes.

(Yes, an updated version will be released. Also, I'm an idiot.)

the map is already dead.... people cheating like crazy.

recompile it and call it dust3 instead..
ASK VALVE to release it as official =)

Slainchild at 23:49 on May 11, 2005

Yes, please do recomplile the map... :(

You can call it de_dust_PCG_fixed or something.

peagle at 01:20 on May 12, 2005

Yes, please re-release the map. I love the layout, but I'm spending half the game setting exploiters on fire (ty Beetlemod :)

jfive at 02:40 on May 12, 2005

Please recompile the map as i would love to play this map with less exploiters! :)

Tonedef at 23:55 on May 11, 2005

I also think the map plays quite sluggish, I get great FPS on all the other maps but this one kills my FPS. And there isn't even water! But a good map nonetheless, love the layout it is very refreshing like making a right-hand turn in NASCAR :P.

Great potential.

Hopefully the clipping and framerate issues can be taken care of.

Thanks Dave.

Haha you are a legend :D

PC Gamer must love you now :)

Look forward to a fix. No idea how you're gonna get everyone using the same version now tho ;D

I don't know what the nature of your contract is with PCGamer, but you'd be doing the community a huge favour by recompiling your map.

Stoner-Pimp at 11:18 on May 12, 2005

You could call it
de_pcg_dust
This way everyone has to download the new map and there will be no conflict with the other map.

Aono at 13:07 on May 12, 2005

Great map. Just one more thing I can add to the fix list, there seems to be an invisable barrel in site A.

It still blocks and acts like a barrel, so you tend to get stuck on it and get confused.

dave at 13:32 on May 12, 2005

Aono: thanks for that one!

Flip at 14:04 on May 12, 2005

love the map, as others have said on steamforums, i like how it is not 'square' it has curve to it, its different, AWESOME, goodjob!

T@F at 14:28 on May 12, 2005

smeerkat at 02:35 on May 16, 2005

This is a great site. Do other Valve mappers have blogs like this?

The Cartographer at 05:31 on May 16, 2005

Great map, great layout. I didn't see any skywalking exploits, but I did find that my FPS were kinda low.

Atrocity at 15:16 on May 17, 2005

Hey Dave, glad to see your fixing this up, makes me laugh pretty hard actually. It's great to see a professional make a small mistake ever once and a while.
